The longer I live in Japan, the more my questions multiply rather than resolve. Not the grand questions of philosophy, but the small, oddly persistent ones: Why is this here? Why is it done this way? Why does everyone accept this so calmly?
A “weird” Kyoto tour is about the strange coexistence of restraint and exaggeration. Why adults queue patiently to decorate their faces in purikura booths. Why anime characters appear everywhere, mediating emotions that real people prefer not to display. Why cuteness becomes a social language, and why seriousness is often disguised as play.
