When I first moved to Osaka and began to understand its past, I was genuinely astounded. Beneath its rough, energetic surface lies a city shaped by merchants, pragmatism, and resilience—very different from the refined image often associated with Japan. Osaka wasn’t built to impress at first glance; it was built to function, to trade, to adapt. Realizing this changed how I saw everything around me—from its architecture to its streets—and revealed a deeper, more honest character that continues to fascinate me.
To this day, Osaka remains—by far—my favorite place, even after experiencing most of Japan’s major cities.
